What is involved in a PAT
To minimise risk of causing fire and injury to operators of portable electrical equipment in the workplace or equipment on hire guidelines as required by the Health & Safety Executive (HSE) and taking into account the requirements of the Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, The Provision & Uses of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 and the Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.
The guidelines are put in place to ensure business owners and employers make reasonable efforts to ensure the safety of their employees and customers when using portable electrical equipment. Several visual and mechanical tests are carried out on each appliance to ensure it can be used safely within the environment it is designed for for the following 12 months.
All business equipment to be tested has to be switched off unplugged and then plugged into our Megger PAT4 machine that measures and records a series of tests applicable to the class of each electrical appliance. Whilst being tested the appliance is unusable for work and it therefore may be practical to carry out PAT test out of business hours. Great care is taken when testing computer IT equipment and the type connected to networks or telephone exchanges. Following the PAT test It is the responsibility of the business or employer to make sure that users of the electrical appliances are briefed in using the equipment safely and to maintain regular visual checks of the equipment to minimise risk to themselves and others.
Example: If a hairdresser drops a hairdryer at work and the plastic casing cracks this increases the possibly of exposing live electric components to the user or the ingress of water making it extremely dangerous in its working environment - it should not therefore be used by the hairdresser or anyone else! It should be destroyed or disabled (by cutting of the plug and labelling it as dangerous) until it can be properly repaired.
All our testing equipment is re-calibrated every 12 months to ensure accurate measurements are taken.
Certificate & Report
A few days after we have carried out our tests, you will receive a laminated test certificate (shown) and a bound report logging all the test results for each appliance in detail. To save on paper digital certificates and reports are also available by email on request.
We will contact you before your next annual test is due to arrange an appointment.
